Danish trio NELSON CAN have come a very long way indeed since their inception. Built on a DIY approach to storm the music industry head-on, rewinding back to their beginnings in 2011 band members Selina Gin (vocals), Signe SigneSigne (bass) and Maria Juntunen (drums) as three head-strong young women with little else other than a solid conviction in their unconventional approach to their fledgling career and a “no guitar” policy that’s still in force today.
With a noticeable lack of guitars, their back-to-basics, drum and bass orientated sound is original and simple, inspired by acts like The White Stripes, Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Siouxsie and the Banshees. In the last few years the band has toured across most of Europe, supporting the likes of The Black Keys and Royal Blood. Their music has been featured in campaigns for major brands like Volkswagen and Vespa, and the girls also run their own record label in Denmark called Like a Can of Beans Records, where they release music from local upcoming talent.
As plans go, it’s not worked out too badly – the Copenhagen three-piece recently scored a #1 record in the Danish official Top 40 Vinyl chart with their latest record EP3 released on UK independent label Alcopop! Records. Soon after, they a range of TV performances followed including the 2017 award show P3 Guld with a live performance of their single ‘Break Down Your Walls’, which was subsequently named pick of the week on Danish radio station P3. In 2017 Danish newspaper Politiken, and the music magazines GAFFA, Soundvenue and Undertoner all put EP3 on their lists of the best Danish records of the year and the band received a prize from the National Danish Art Foundation claiming it to be 'a small masterpiece'.
If the early reaction to their output so far is anything to go by, their mission to conquer the world is well on its way to completion.
